Following completion of her studies with the Professional Division at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Claire Wootten danced professionally with the Alberta Ballet Company.  She is a graduate of the Teacher Training Program at Canada’s National Ballet School and has taught and adjudicated extensively throughout Canada.  Her credits as an educator include the Canadian Children’s Dance Theatre, the Alberta Ballet School, Dance Nova Scotia, the British Columbia Festival of the Arts, and L’École de danse de Québec.  She has taught at York University since 1990, joining the full-time faculty in the Department of Dance in 2004.  She is also a freelance rehearsal director.

Assoc. Professor Wootten’s research interests have evolved from years of studio-based, student-centered work, and include dance feminism and radical dance pedagogies.  She is past Chair of Dance Media Group/Groupe Danse Média, which publishes Canada’s national dance magazine, The Dance Current, and has served on the board of CORPS de Ballet International (Council of Organized Researchers for Pedagogical Studies).

Assoc. Professor Wootten currently serves as Chair of the Department of Dance, and Interim Chair of the MA/PhD Program in Dance.
