Louise Wrazen

Professor Wrazen is an ethnomusicologist with a background in musicology and education, whose research revolves around issues of local music-making and constructions of identity. Her primary research concerns the music of the Polish Tatras (with fieldwork in Toronto, Poland and Chicago). Other research interests include music and diaspora; music, place and memory; gender and music; and music within fragile communities. Her publications include articles and reviews in the journals EthnomusicologyThe Anthropology of East Europe Review, Canadian Journal for Traditional Musicand Ethnomusicology Forum.

Dr. Wrazen is an active member of numerous Canadian and international associations, including the Society for Ethnomusicology, International Council for Traditional Music and Canadian Society for Traditional Music. Trained in classical piano, she has performed Balkan music (gadulka and singing) and Polish Tatra music with Toronto-based groups.

Professor Wrazen joined York University's Music Department in 2003. Previous teaching appointments include Queen’s University, the University of Toronto and the Ontario College of Art and Design. She also has taught in Toronto’s public school system and been involved in special needs programming.
