Scholarships, Awards & Bursaries

The Faculty of Fine Arts offers a myriad of scholarships, awards and bursaries to provide financial support to students during their studies.

Scholarship recipients are selected largely on the basis of outstanding academic achievement. Academic excellence and financial need are the primary criteria for an award. Bursaries and awards are granted on the basis of student financial need, with some consideration given to academic progress. Some awards will have additional criteria which you can find on the individual award descriptions.

Alan Lessem Memorial Award

Award value: $600.00

Given in recognition of an outstanding piece of scholarly written work in an upper level course in Music. Awarded to a graduating Music student.

Anatol Schlosser Fund

Award value: $695.00

Eligibility:

  • Must demonstrate financial need

Additional requirements:

  • Given to a theatre undergrad theatre major who is entering or is currently in the Concurrent Education program.

  • The recipient must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 6.00

Andrew Tomcik Scholarship

Award value: $1,936.00

Eligibility:

  • Must demonstrate financial need

Additional requirements:

  • Successfully completed minimum of 54 credits and maximum of 83 credits

Anne Lazare-Mirvish Award

Award value: $1,000.00

Awarded to a current undergraduate student majoring in visual arts

Eligibility:

  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person
  • Must be a resident of Ontario
  • Undergraduate student

Additional requirements:

  • Must have completed a minimum of 24 credits and is taking at least one sculpture course.

  • Recipient must have a GPA of 6.00 (B)

Award value: 3 at $1,000.00

Given in recognition of excellence in art history to a visual arts student enrolled in Year 2 of studies or higher of the BA program.

A scholarship in recognition of studio performance and demonstrated excellence in studio work

CASA Fine Arts Student Award

Award value: $586.35

Chair of Design Scholarship:

Award value: $1,286.00

Recognizes outstanding achievement in typography and is given to an undergraduate BDes student who has successfully completed a minimum of 84 credits.

CIBC Fine Art Student Awards

Award value: 7 at $3,142.00

Awarded to undergraduate students entering or continuing in the Faculty of Fine Arts. Students will apply in the Fall term of the year the award is being disbursed.

Eligibility:

  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Undergraduate student

Additional requirements:

  • Recipients must have a minumum entrance average of 85% if they are in their first year of studies or a minimum OGPA of 6.50 (B+) or equivalent

Cinespace Studios Film & Video Production Award

Award value: $1,400.00

This award recognizes exceptional artistic merit and achievement shown by a Year 3 film and video major. Awarded at end of Winter term to a 3rd year Film & Video major returning to 4th year Production.

Open to 4th year undergraduate or graduate students who have completed course work and are writing a thesis. Based on grade point average and financial need (in that order).

Award value: 3 at $425.00

Recognizes outstanding achievement in design.

The Department of Visual Arts Award is given annually to a visual arts student with a strong academic record.

Award value: 14 at $2,250.00

The Department Specific Awards are available to students entering their 3rd or 4th year within any department or program in the Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA).

Award value: $1,286.00

Awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement in design practicum courses.

Douglas Menzie Phillips Jazz Scholarship

Award value: $2,500.00

Awarded for outstanding achievement in instrumental jazz performance. Open to Music majors enrolled in jazz workshops.

Dr. Peter Zaparinuk Memorial Scholarship

Award value: $2,500.00

Awarded for outstanding achievement in contemporary composition. 3rd or 4th year Music majors will automatically be considered.

E.J. Lightman Scholarship

Award value: $700.00

  • Open to undergraduates in their 3rd or 4th year of study majoring in Visual Arts (preferably sculpture)
  • Demonstrated financial need may be taken into consideration

  • Must have achieved a minimum overall GPA of 7.5

E.S. Rogers Film & Video Production Award

Award value: $1,975.00

Awarded in recognition of academic excellence to a Year 4 production student in the Department of Film to help offset production costs for an approved fourth-year project of outstanding merit. Successful recipients must submit receipt for their project to the Department of Film.

Elizabeth Mascall Prize

The Elizabeth Mascall Prize is awarded annually to a 2nd year student in the Department of Theatre for exceptional acting performances in a play presented by the University during that year. Each prize will consist of one free subscription to the four or five plays to be presented by the University Alumnae Dramatic Club in the following season at the Alumnae Theatre.

Elizabeth Szathmary Theatre Scholarships

Award value: 4 at $1,800.00

The Elizabeth Szathmary Scholarships will be given annually to four (4) full-time undergraduate students in the Department of Theatre, Faculty of Fine Arts. A student can only receive this scholarship once.

  • Undergraduate student

  • Must have completed two years of study as theatre majors.

  • The recipients will have attained minimum overall grade point averages of 7.50.

Submission of a Student Financial Profile is required for this bursary for undergraduate students. Graduate students should submit a bursary application to their departments.

Fitzhenry-Weatherhead Theatre Award

Award value: $575.00

  • Given in recognition of excellence and achievement in academic studies or creative work in theatre to a Year 3 or 4 theatre major enrolled in any of York’s theatre programs.
  • Both part-time and full-time students are encouraged to apply.

  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person

Additional requirements:

  • Selection/eligibility criteria include completion of at least 48 academic credits, and sound academic standing (minimum 6.00 (B) average).

Gajdecki Visual Effects Award

Award value: $1,190.00

General Internship Award

Award value: $10,000.00

Note: The number and value of the internships are at the discretion of the Dean and will be determined after the application process is closed and all applications have been reviewed.

General Internships are available to students entering their 3rd or 4th year within any department or program in the Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA). To be eligible for consideration, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Fine Arts majors enrolled in full-time or part-time studies in any FFA department or program, at any year level

  • Priority consideration will be given to the needs of students with disabilities and students from groups that have been historically disadvantaged because of race, color, ancestry and/or ethnic origin. (Applicants are encouraged to self-identify on application)

  • Must demonstrate acute financial need, to the point where continuation of studies is in jeopardy

Award value: 6 at $942.00

The Interdisciplinary Project Awards are available to students entering their 3rd or 4th year within any department or program in the Faculty of Fine Arts (FFA).

To be eligible for these awards students must meet the following criteria:

J.P. Bickell Foundation Awards

Award value: 7 at $1,257.00

Open to Fine Arts students engaged in Faculty of Fine Arts projects, courses or programs involving community outreach.

Jack Bush Scholarship

Award value: 6 at $800.00

  • No application is required to be eligible for this scholarship. Students are selected based on academic merit.
  • At least six scholarships will be awarded annually to continuing undergraduate students in the Department of Visual Arts or the Fine Arts Cultural Studies program
  • Concentrating in either studio or art history.
  • Recipients will be selected in the spring; however, they must re-register in the fall of the same year and be registered in at least one visual arts course in order to receive the monetary value.

James Beveridge Bursary

Awarded to applicant with the best proposal for a documentary film for 4th year production.

Open to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Fine Arts majoring in theatre, music, film or dance. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated leadership abilities or have a proven track record of community service.

Open to students majoring in music with preference given to students who demonstrate talent in jazz performance.

Award value: 7 at $485.00

Given to a Year 3 or 4 student in each department within the Faculty of Fine Arts, in recognition of creative and/or scholarly achievement. Students may apply or a department may nominate a student for the award.

L.L. Odette Sculpture Scholarship

Award value: 3 at $600.00

  • An annual scholarship will be awarded to a Year 4 student in the Department of Visual Arts.
  • The prime consideration for the award is merit in sculpture.
  • A secondary factor is overall academic standing.

Lynn Sarah Torode Memorial Scholarship

Awarded in recognition of academic/artistic excellence and promise to a 4th year Film student specializing in cinematography or television in the Department of Film. Preference will be given to a female student as this award commemorates Lynn Torode, the first female cinematographer at the CBC.

Marion Lower Prizes in Composition

Michael Plexman Award for Creative Innovation

Universal Studios Canada Film & Video Scholarship

Awarded to 4th year film and video majors in recognition of outstanding achievement in production work to date and the merit of their fourth-year project proposals. The scholarship will be used to offset production expenses of fourth-year projects.

All 4th year production students who have submitted project proposals are automatically considered. Successful candidates will receive their Scholarship funds upon presentation of receipts for production expenses associated with their fourth-year project.
